Tips for Preparing Your Home for Fall and Winter

Fall is in full swing with the beautiful changing leaves and the weather is perfect for roasting s’mores over the bonfire. Over the next few weeks, as the temperatures start to dip low in North Carolina, homeowners should prepare for winter. This includes getting that winter survival kit ready but also your home needs some attention.

Here are some tips for preparing a home for the cooler weather to come:

  • Inspect the roof: Perform a close inspection on the roof to look for damaged, detached, or missing shingles. If left unattended, these may leak during winter storms or from melting snow.
  • Tune-up the heating system: Hire a professional to tune up the furnace or heat pump. Making sure the system is clean and in good condition ensures that it will work at maximum efficiency to keep the family warm. Also, it wouldn’t hurt to inspect vents around the house to make sure they are not blocked or covered.
  • Reverse ceiling fans: Hot air rises and by running the ceiling fan in a clockwise direction, the fan will produce an updraft and push the heated air down into the room. This is a great way to help keep the house warm without having to bump the heat up so high.
  • Clean gutters: The changing leaves are pretty to look at during the Fall, but they do tend to settle in gutters. Clogged gutters can cause water to back up against the house, eventually causing water damage. Be sure gutters are cleaned out so that when the snow melts, it can drain properly.

Don’t wait until the last minute to be sure the home is ready for the cold weather. Accurate Renovation comes highly recommended around the Triangle. If you need help preparing for this coming season, give Accurate Renovation a call!
